Have you ever been in the mood to go somewhere and do something, but you didn’t know where or what? Well, that’s the mood I (Ginny) am in. One of my problems is I LOVE being at home. I like to clean my own house, do my own gardening, cook our meals, and work in the quiet of my office that offers a private, pretty, and peaceful view. I like being here when kids (adult) and grandkids (ranging in age from 25 to due-in-September) drop by. So going anywhere for any significant length of time presents a conflict for me. I understand the workings of the brain, however, so I realize that a change in scenery is important in order to stimulate the senses.
So this morning over coffee Franks says to me, “Well, we can drive to the coast!” I answer with “Hmmmm…” “Or“ sez Frank, “we could go to the ashram [yoga retreat].” “Uhhh… yeah, I guess” sez I. “How ‘bout Calistoga?” sez Frank. I give him an imaginary gold star for effort and reply, “Nah… don’t think so.” He strives on: “San Francisco? Tahoe? Coronado? Hiking? Camping?” I make a face. And so goes the conversation until I dig deep for insight and say, “I think I want to go somewhere we haven’t been before.” We kick some ideas around but nothing makes the earth move for me.
So here’s my question for YOU - where do YOU like to go to get away? We are open to suggestion! At the risk of sounding like a personal ad: we enjoy remote places, the fewer people the better, soft sunsets, and cute little critters willing to share their environment with us. We like good food and love room service, but are equally pleased with simple food rehydrated over an open fire. What we don’t want or need is a TV, internet hook up, live band, organized tour, or anything with dress requirements. We’re also limited to one, maybe two nights away from home, as our dog suffers from separation anxiety and we have to arrange for a sitter -- which appeases him minimally. But for now it’s work as usual. In addition to seeing clients and teaching classes, we have all put a lot into phase one of promoting the new book, Charming Children. It went well but now phase two will place even more demands on my time and energy. Guess that’s why I want to get away while I can, and rev up for personal presentations and book signings. It occurs to me that retired (re-tired) may mean tired again. Thank goodness for vitamins (and dark chocolate)! Meanwhile our peer level support groups are winding down. The reprisal was well worth the 3 hours a week I invested for 16 weeks … helping 12 participants train the brain by using conversational techniques and group dynamics. New classes will be forming “down the road” in both Stockton and Modesto. Stay tuned. I’ll also soon be done for the semester teaching at UOP, which will let us do our get-away during the week, thereby avoiding the weekend crunch. I’m very serious when I say we’re anxious to hear from you with recommendations! Please! And speaking of grandkids (I know I wasn’t, but I am now), our two littlest visited recently. They didn’t want to leave, of course, so to distract them I talked about how much fun it is to wave goodbye. As they were hopping into their car seats Annabella (5½) said, “Gramma, I’m gonna wave THREE times!” I said, “Okay!” Evelyn (3½ ) gave it a split second before saying with a twinkle in her eye, “Gramma, I’m gonna wave FOUR times!”

We always have a good time and make sure our audience does, too. One more favor I’d like to ask: TO KEEP YOURSELF AND OTHERS ALIVE DON’T TALK ON YOUR CELL OR TEXT WHILE YOU DRIVE! It takes only the blink of an eye to end a life. Oprah recently had a neurophysician on her show, explaining what happens to the brain when our attention is divided. It happens without our awareness and beyond our control. She also featured guests who had lost loved ones who thought dying so needlessly would never happen to them. Wrong… Multitasking MEANS dividing your attention. It should NEVER include driving. Let’s all learn this the easy way, not the hard way!
