Welcome to EVERGREEN OUTREACH!

HAPPY NEW YEAR!

Now come the resolutions!

There are only two ways to begin an action - consciously or subconsciously. Consciously means that you think about it. You analyze and assess. Then you exert enough effort to begin. Or not. Subconsciously means you do it without thinking about it. You do it effortlessly, automatically, sometimes without even realizing you’re doing it… until it’s done, or at least in progress.

The example I (Ginny) like to give is this: Ever come home, toss your keys on the table, then think, “Oops! Forgot to lock the car.” You go out to do it, and realize you already locked it… without realizing it. This is because your subconscious mind prompted you to lock the car, while your conscious mind was thinking about something else!

Most people think about their New Year’s resolutions, and this is what their list might look like:

I’m going to exercise more.

I’m going to stop eating sweets.

I’m going to organize all my closets.

I’m going to look for a new job.

Thinking about something consciously uses less than 10% of your brain power. The other 90% is your subconscious mind, and this is where feelings are processed. Feelings are stronger than thoughts, and we’re not always aware of our feelings that are stored subconsciously. (That’s why this part is called sub-conscious… it’s below the level of our conscious awareness.) So if you think about doing something and for some unknown reason it isn’t working for you, there’s probably a feeling that’s getting in your way. What to do about it?

Decide on a feeling that will help you succeed, instead of fail, and use it! Consider this revised list of resolutions:

I feel healthier because I exercise.

I feel energetic because I stay away from sweets.

I feel in control because I’m organizing my closets.

I feel excited because I’m looking for a better job.

Remember: If it’s in your head, it’s an idea (step one). If it’s on paper, it’s a plan (step two… now you‘re getting somewhere). So put it in writing -- or print; and if you’re computer-savvy include colorful, fun graphics on your list. A smiley face. A healthy body. An award for excellence, etc. Why? Because along with feelings, your subconscious mind creates and responds to pictures! So accessing feelings and using pictures (actual or imaginary) means you are using a higher percentage of your own brainpower to accomplish your goals.

Some people say two heads are better than one. I say two minds are better than one! The important thing is knowing when/how to put the conscious mind in charge, and when/how to let your subconscious lead the way. One (conscious) is the workplace of the mind, the other (subconscious) is the playground of the mind. Most of us wear ourselves out working too hard at the game of life. Sometimes we can get more done (with less stress) when we let our inner child play. Imagine that…
